written by reader Solar Investment

By Anonymous Questions, June 22, 2016

I am a retired electrical engineer and one of the first to go solar in my neighborhood 3 years ago. My system generates 100% of my electrical power needs and has returned my investment in about 4 years. Still, not 1% of the homes in my area have solar power.

It is obvious that the world is going solar and the prices will drop
even more. There is a bunch of money to be made in solar investing. I think this is one of the greatest opportunities in my lifetime.

Please address for your members some advice on how to invest in Solar while it is still in its infantcy.

Thanks

Solar is growing incredibly rapidly, I’m not currently invested in any solar companies. There is huge competition, and many of the biggest players got far too aggressive with debt (SunEdison, particularly). The trouble we’ve seen so far is that the panels are fairly commoditized (so the prices keep falling) and the installers are incredibly aggressive and are using tons of capital, like SolarCity, in order to build a large installed base. I think solar is a great story for consumers and hopefully for pollution over time, but I haven’t been thrilled by the investment case of many of the companies I’ve looked at. The only company I own with a real solar business is Crius, which is more of an energy marketer that happens to have commissions from solar installation sales as part of its revenue growth potential.

Hi, for a very risky (highrisk/pot high reward) play do some reading on Natcore.
This co has been teased and Thinkolated on this site as well. Travis is reasonably negative on them (with justification). Disclosure I am long for 3 years and follow they closely. Also much more info on Seeking Alpha site from Alan downunder (not Australia)
