I joined Terrys Tips after reading his book, “Making 36%”, which outlines a “conservative” approach of calendar spreads on a $10,000 (scalable) portfolio. The objective is to take out 3% each month, thereby having a portfolio that generates 36% cash flow per year. Supposedly the gains have been considerably higher than this amount over the years since 2001.

I signed up for several different portfolios that he offers, initiating a $25,000 new account with TD Ameritrade so that I could easily track the performance. Unfortunately, that is where the problems lie. Performance is a MAJOR issue, with almost every one of the auto-traded portfolios he offers.

Since I have been a member the past 6 weeks, 2 portfolios were eliminated due to basically losing 90% + of their initial capital invested. Of the remaining portfolios, here are the current results.

10k classic (36%-SPY) returns since 5-12= (16.9%)
Big Bear(SPY) returns since 11-12= (60.8)
Boomers Revenge (SPY) since 9-10= (71%)
Dog of Dogs(VXX) since 12-12= (49.3%)
PEA Picker since 4-13= +331%
Straddle Central since 5-13= +22.2%
Terrys Trades since 1-13= (42.6%)
Vista Valley since 6-13= (1.7%)

So out of the 10 portfolios I was exposed to 8 were losers. 80% losers does not add up to a winning strategy.

Obviously, these type results are not what I call “conservative” investing. In the Big Bear portfolio twice the market did exactly what the trades were set up to take advantage of, only to have losses of 26.9% and 7% due to constant “re-adjustments”. The same thing happened in the 10K (36%) portfolio where a “perfect” week for the trading goals that should have been a 20% gain resulted in a loss of 11% for the week.

My portfolio has gone from $25,000 to $20,406 in 6 weeks, despite 300 free trades from Ameritrade! I shudder to think what the portfolio would have looked like without the free trades.

Also dont get too excited about his PEA picker current success. While its true that the 12 trades in a row in that portfolio have been successful, he was trading this in another portfolio “Earnings Eagle” which was discontinued do to losing over 90% of the initial $10,000 investment. Also, he lists this as a +331% since $6,000 was removed via cash. Nevertheless, the reality is that the initial $5,000 would currently show you with $11,625, which I would not consider a 331% return.

Needless to say, the proof is always in the results. A team of great players does not always make a winner. In this case, what sounds like a very conservative and sound investment strategy is obviously not working in the current market conditions.

I have been using Terry’s Tips for a few years and auto traded some of his portfolios during this time. I am not sure if I made money in the auto traded portfolios or not (I think I have) but I keep paying monthly payments because of the advice that he gives in every Saturday Reports newsletter that he puts out. Terry has great insights on the market and trade suggestions that he puts into the Saturday Report that are outside of his portfolios, for example I made six figures on an investment in XIV that he pointed out in one of these reports. At least one of his portfolios is designed to be down market protection and when the market has been in an uptrend for most of the past 7 years it seldom makes any money on purpose. If one decides to auto trade one or more of his portfolios he/she should research which one(s) he thinks are going to be most profitable and go in small to start.

Terry,

What can I say I used to work for him/son/step son. He is great at getting peoples money. You should ask him about the financial rags he started int the 80’s and 90’s.

Cheers!!!

Terry is a charlatan. I paid for a year of auto trading in mid-2018 and he proceeded to lose almost my entire first $10,000 and follow-on investments. Then, he wrote about his best strategy ever. He and his shill, Seth, really believed they could do 10% a week some weeks with this and it was very safe trading a range of calendar options for Microsoft because he had been doing it in his “personal” account. Well, out of $44,000 total he traded away all but $14,000 and this is declining fast too. I have lost thousands more in my retirement account (which is not auto-tradeable anymore) following his advice too.

He refuses to answer emails and have any accountability now, but his excuses remain the same. He has adjusted because the market has gone up and down during the same week. Well, that’s what the market does, go up and down. He keeps stating his risk reward profiles show double digit profits are possible if the market is flat or slightly up. Then it does just that and yet he loses anyway. This is misleading investors! Save your money and do not let Terry lose it for you. I do far better without his advice and will be withdrawing my last thousands and asking for my money back ASAP.

Had a very similar experience several years ago, except lost a bit more than that. One horrible trade recommendation after another. I read his materials and was convinced if I stuck with his suggestions and recommendations I could end up with profit. Even put a sizable portion into an auto-trade account he was managing. In about 6 months I lost 75% of the original investment. Would NOT recommend his book(s), materials, advice or opinions. Beware of Terrys Tips.

Too complicated. I like his ideas and writings Very volatile, he has paid for the premium fee, but after that it get complicated, with constant adjustments to the trade, therefore many commissions. I don’t make very many trades now that i covered my cost. there is a lot of reading.

I asked Terry for his monthly performance of all his strategies for the past 3 years.
He initially responded thinking I was asking for his actual trades, but I clarified and he has not sent or provided the requested performance data for his monthly performance for all his strategies for the past 3 years.
He portrays his activity as being totally open and honest, so why are the monthly performance of all his strategies for the past 3 years not readily available. If he does not provide them then I would will not consider his strategies fitting to consider.
No one should subscribe and spend one penny if this type of data is not provided – to allow you to see the performance history.
